Score Reading Mastery

Score Reading Mastery is a specialised sight-reading course designed mainly for students who want or need to develop strong sheet music reading ability and musical interpretation through structured score-based training

Students learn to read music fluently while developing a clear understanding of intervallic relationships, harmonic structure, and excellent keyboard orientation.

Rather than relying on slow note-by-note decoding, students are trained to recognise musical patterns and structural relationships that allow them to approach written music with greater confidence and fluency.

This course is also very suitable for students preparing for ABRSM practical piano examinations (Grades 1–5) or other graded examinations that rely heavily on written music.

Course Structure

Training in Score Reading Mastery progresses through two levels of sight-reading development.

Score Reading Core Level

Students develop sight-reading fluency through five progressive stages that gradually expand both pitch recognition and rhythmic understanding.

Training focuses on:

  • progressive development of pitch and rhythmic fluency

  • harmonic interval recognition

  • confident keyboard orientation across all key signatures

  • understanding larger harmonic structures

  • reading across varied metric contexts

Score Reading Advanced Level

At the advanced level, students apply their reading skills to more complex musical textures including:

  •  contrapuntal sight-reading

  • multi-voice score reading

  • advanced rhythmic interpretation

  • harmonic voice interaction

Students completing this level develop the ability to approach complex written music with confidence and clarity.

Students interested in the Advanced Level are required to have completed the Core Level or demonstrate the ability to read at the Core Level standard.
