Score-Free Musicianship
Score-Free Musicianship is designed for students who want to play by ear, improvise, and perform confidently without relying on written music.
Rather than teaching improvisation through guesswork or memorised scales, the course focuses on helping students understand how music is structurally organised at the keyboard.
A central principle of the training is that harmony is understood through how musical ideas relate to the bass.
Instead of memorising long lists of chord names and patterns, students learn to recognise how melodies and harmonies move in relation to the bass. Once this relationship becomes clear, improvisation, accompaniment, and playing by ear become far easier to understand and perform.
This course is particularly suitable for:
church musicians who need to perform confidently without written scores
adult learners interested in improvisation and creative music-making
students interested in modern musical styles • aspiring producers and songwriters
musicians who want to develop strong playing-by-ear ability
The Core Idea Behind the Training
At True Craft Academy, improvisation is not treated as a mysterious talent.

Instead, students learn how music is organised around the movement of the bass.
When students recognise how melodies and harmonies relate to the bass, they begin to understand how musical ideas are built and how they move from one moment to the next.
To support this process, students learn practical tools that help them organise musical ideas clearly, including:
-
A bass-centred approach to understanding chords
-
Modal systems that help organise melodic movement
-
The use of non-chord tones to create melodic motion
Together, these tools allow students to recognise musical patterns quickly and apply them naturally while improvising or accompanying at the keyboard.
What Students Gain
Students who complete training in Score-Free Musicianship typically develop the ability to:
-
Recognise harmonic movement quickly
-
Organise melodic ideas naturally around bass movement
-
play music by ear with increasing confidence
-
improvise melodies and accompaniment patterns
-
accompany singers and other musicians comfortably
-
adapt their playing across different musical styles
These skills allow students to move beyond simply reproducing written music and begin expressing musical ideas more freely and confidently at the keyboard
Core Training Structure
As students progress, they gradually develop a deeper understanding of how musical ideas are organised.
Training develops this understanding through four levels of musical organisation.
Structural Level Students learn how melodic notes relate to the bass, helping them recognise how musical lines are built.

Musical Styles
Because the training focuses on musical structure rather than style-specific tricks, students can apply their skills across many musical traditions.
Students commonly apply their training in styles such as:
-
jazz piano
-
boogie-woogie
-
contemporary gospel music
-
highlife
-
seben
-
R&B;
-
pop piano (solo and accompaniment)
As students become more comfortable recognising musical patterns and harmonic movement, they can adapt their playing naturally to the musical styles they enjoy most.
